hen I heard about Hotel Montreal and its new Polo Bar, which has emerged from the bones of the former Chateau Blanc Apartments, I couldn't drive past without having to fight the urge to call in for a quick nose. When one of my girlfriends told me about the amazing jeans at Halo & Hazard I wanted to drop everything and get there straight away so I wouldn't miss out on the best styles. It's the same when some of the team here turn up with gorgeous little gifts or eclectic pieces from the many quaint homeware and gift stores around town, I have a moment of 'fomo', especially if they say the piece they bought was almost sold out! Fomo, an acronym from 'fear of missing out', has morphed into our vocabulary and made its way into some of the more casual dictionaries. And while we all experience this emotion at various times, for some it can become extreme. Psychologist John Grohol gives a prime example of fomo in a social context: “Teens and adults text while driving, because the possibility of a social connection is more important than their own lives (and the lives of others). They interrupt one call to take another, even when they don't know who's on the other line. They check their Twitter stream while on a date, because something more interesting or entertaining just might be happening.” It's their fear of missing out on a different connection, whether it be better, or worse, that drives them to keep checking he explains. While the disciplines of our working lives tends to curtail acting on our fear of missing out, one thing that will keep you up with the play and give your free-time wanderings purpose is to have a read through the following pages. As usual we bring you all the latest on what's happening around town and some amazing places to shop. Capping off a year of progress The Arts Centre has capped off a year of significant progress with the restoration of one of its best-known architectural features, the College Hall turret.

he turret, which has been extensively strengthened and restored, was craned into position atop College Hall on Rolleston Avenue recently. Removed after the September 2010 earthquake, the 21tonne structure was lifted into place using a 160-tonne crane before being fastened into a new concrete ring. Extensively renovated by Fletcher Construction Company and Arts Centre stonemasons over the last six months, the turret has been relined with concrete, replacing the original interior brickwork, and the entire tower structure reinforced with concrete and steel. Once completed, the turret will be tied through the tower to a new footing at pavement level with steel rods. Around 10 percent of the exterior stonework has been replaced by the Arts Centre's team of stonemasons, repairing the damage suffered in the region's first major earthquake. Arts Centre CEO André Lovatt says the restoration is symbolic of the progress made on-site – not just in terms of restoration but also earthquake strengthening. “We were very fortunate to have the turret survive that original earthquake, and even more so that the decision was taken to remove the structure prior to February 2011 or damage to this section of the site could have been far more significant,” says Mr Lovatt. During the September 2010 earthquake, the turret broke free of its footing and rotated in place about 50mm.

Well worth saving and strengthening – the turret pre-quakes. “Like the Clock Tower on Worcester Boulevard, the turret on Rolleston Avenue is one of the site's most recognisable features – especially to visitors to the Botanic Gardens.” “As we progress towards the completion of College Hall – set to reopen in 2015 – we are very pleased to have the structure completed and strengthened to a level where we can now proudly display such a unique feature.” The reinstallation of the turret marks a step closer to the completion of the extensive seven-year, $290 million restoration programme. During this period of restoration, the re-opening of the site will be gradually phased in.

five minutes with Entrepreneur and beer connoisseur Ralph Bungard is the man behind Three Boys Brewery which he started in 2004. Recently his Three Boys Oyster Stout was named best for its style in the inaugural New World Beer & Cider Awards. Ralph is a scientist and his winning stout’s name is no gimmick – real Bluff oysters are used in the brewing process. I caught up with this passionate brewer to find out a little more about how he has become one of New Zealand’s top brewers…

Why did you decide to leave your career in academic science? I love science and was pretty good at it (if I can say that!). But it is really difficult to achieve in science in New Zealand when the industry is very small and funding is focussed primarily on practical agricultural applications of science. My wife and I lived in the UK for some time where I worked as a scientist. In the UK, funding is pretty good and the science industry is impressive. But once we had our first child, it became pretty clear that growing up in the north of England was no comparison to growing up in New Zealand; so like many Kiwis, we moved home with a sacrifice of career potential for lifestyle – a good decision! What inspired you to start a craft brewery? I trained as a wine maker after my first degree and before I got sucked into hard science as a researcher. I love wine and thought that it might be the industry for me. After working in the UK though, I got more interested in beer (they have great beer in the UK). And after returning to NZ and working again as a scientist, I realised how limited the beer selection was in New Zealand at that time. That is when the germ of the idea to start a brewery began.

Why is your brewery called Three Boys? That is a question that we are often asked and we largely leave that up to the imagination of our customers! I do have two sons though and my wife Brigid has three boys in the house if she counts me! What were the challenges of setting up a brewery? It is one of those things where, if I was given the task now and had a list of all the things that needed to be done to set up the brewery and business that we have today, then I probably would have said “no thanks!”. I think that is a typical Kiwi way of starting a business though – just start one and see what happens! Probably not the best model and probably why NZ has so many start-up businesses and so many small business failures. The challenges are the same in any start-up business: having to be jack-of-all trades, lack of finances, etc. I guess one big challenge for any small brewery is to get consistency in your product though, so that your customers can come to rely on you for quality and value.

Has your science background helped you in the brewing industry? Most certainly! Biochemistry is such a big part of brewing at every stage of production, from the first task of mashing in the malt, to the last stage of getting the product packaged for sale. I often call it “biochemistry in big pots”. The attention to detail and persistence that is required in science is also a big help – those are things that working in science really teach you. Science also has a very artistic and creative angle too – Is NZ beer distinct like our wines? If so, in what way and who does it appeal to? New Zealand beer is very distinct, and that has been largely driven by the hops. Like grapes where, say Sauvignon Blanc grown in Marlborough is so different than Sauvignon Blanc grown in, say, France or Australia, the same applies to hops. It is just something about the NZ growing conditions that bring out unique flavours in our raw ingredients. On top of that NZ had (and still has) some inspirational hop research and breeding. That has produced unique hop varieties specific to NZ. There is a huge demand for NZ hops overseas and about 80% of our production is exported.

WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH IN CHRISTCHURCH POSTQUAKES AND WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF THOSE WHO HAVE STAYED AND REBUILT THEIR LIVES AND BUSINESSES.

What defines a ‘craft’ brewer or beer? I actually don’t fancy the word “craft” for brewing. For me it conjures up images of felt hats and tie-died caftans! Great beer can be made by brewers of all sizes just as crap beer can be made by brewers of all sizes. I do prefer microbrewery rather than “craft”. Microbrewery simply tells you that the business is small and most likely locally owned and operated.

What temperature does beer taste best at? That really depends on the beer style. Lagers are often better enjoyed cool while some ales are best at cellar temperature – up to around 13-14C. The biggest sin for a flavourful beer is serving it too cold; that just traps in all the flavour and aroma. What are some of your most popular brews and why? Our biggest sellers are our IPA and our Pils. They are great beers and people know what to expect with those styles. We are probably most renowned for our Oyster Stout and Wheat beer – they are uniquely Three Boys. Oyster Stout is New Zealand’s most awarded beer!

On a more personal note: what is your proudest achievement? Getting a double hat-trick for the local Heathcote Cricket Club! Seriously, I can’t think of any single “proudest moment” without being overcome with embarrassment! I am proud of Three Boys Brewery and proud of the great people that now work at Three Boys.

If you could go back and tell your teenage self something, what would it be? Haha! - Without giving some good advice about girls!? I think I would say that it is not really important what you choose to do, as long as you are always doing something and heading towards a goal. I think that there is too much pressure on kids these days to pick a career and stick with it. Change is good and should not be feared. I guess I would summarise in saying to myself that the direction isn’t important but progress is. What is one thing you would like to see in the ‘new’ Christchurch? I’d like to see more locally produced products on sale and a real pride amongst our locals and retailers of our local industries. We have been through so much in Christchurch postquakes and we should be proud of those who have stayed and rebuilt their lives and businesses. Which is your favourite café, restaurant or bar in Christchurch? Every one that sells Three Boys! Easy! What’s next on the wish list? To spend more time hunting and fishing and with my family over summer – and – of course, drinking local beer! Cheers!

Santa at The Court

The Court Theatre is encouraging people to “give the gift of theatre” by purchasing tickets for a new children's play, Mrs McGinty and The Bizarre Plant, and gifting them to Christchurch children in need. Ticket donors will choose which of three Christchurch charities receives the ticket(s): Cholmondeley Children's Centre, Christchurch City Mission or Pillars, a charity for children of prisoners.

This Christmas, The Forge at The Court will help make the Santa experience truly memorable for Christchurch children. Santa and three of his elves will be flying in on 13 December and 20 December prior to their appearance, on Christmas Eve, in chimneys all over the world. Elves R U Nortyornice, Glitterdust and Howdoo Umeasureup, will be assisting Santa in his Forge Christmas Grotto. Not only will they handle the 'Naughty or Nice' list, but also, when Santa takes his milk and biscuit breaks at 10am, 11am and 12 noon, they will entertain Grotto visitors with a story and a carol or two. No queues and no charges As an early Christmas present to mums

and dads, not to mention boys and girls, Santa has banned queues at The Forge Christmas Grotto. Instead his elves will meet the children on arrival and take down their names, checking to see if they are on the naughty or nice list. Children will have plenty to do while they wait to be introduced to Santa; children can chat to the elves, write and post a Christmas letter or take pictures at the photo booth. Santa commented, “Ho ho ho, boys and girls have come to see me in my Grotto not stand in line and I know that mums and dads will appreciate my early Christmas gift of making the whole event free.” Rudolf Redknows, the Santa team's transport co-ordinator, has confirmed that Santa and elves will be at The Court Theatre foyer from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 13 and Saturday 20 December.

More than fifty-three-thousand South Islanders can't be wrong... and even more will soon holiday in Fiji, thanks to extra flights just announced for Christchurch Airport. Fiji Airways will begin a permanent second service each week between Christchurch and Nadi in time for winter holidays in the sun. From June 23 next year the airline will offer year-round Tuesday morning departures to Fiji and on to North America, to complement its existing Saturday service. The full service airline, in two-class configuration, operates at family friendly hours to and from Fiji. Christchurch Airport General Manager Airlines and Alliances, Matthew Findlay, says Fijian holidays have long been popular for South Islanders wanting to escape the winter, especially because Fiji Airways discounts airfares for children.

New boutique hotel on iconic site New life has grown from the bones of one of the city's well known landmarks, creating a luxury boutique hotel which feels surprisingly like home.

The former tower with its domed roof is now a lush lawn set for picnics and outdoor movies, and a thoroughfare running from Peterborough Street to Kilmore Street invites the local community to be part of what owners Lilly Cooper and George Cooper-Dixon have produced. “The whole building was lifted and repaired,” says George, with the extensive repair work designed to retain all the original structural walls. It is in the small details that the hotel comes to life - the New Zealand merino wool curtains which are lined like a custom made suit, the inviting comfort of lounge chairs in the spacious suites, and the soft green of the synthetic grass lined balconies which invite you to remove your shoes. “Every single thing has been thought about,” says manager Lucy Gain, who alongside her sister Amelia is responsible for the day to day running of the hotel. Lilly and George worked with in-house designer Bizz McFarlane to ensure the suites are a perfect mix of luxury with a personal feel – a room that you would want to have in your own home. Many of the furnishings were designed by Bizz, with local suppliers such as David Thurston from Akaroa crafting tables and

When Christchurch resident Purnima Khanna visits her native Mumbai, she heads straight for the street food stalls. Many of the specialities of her city are not readily available in New Zealand. Until now that is. Purnima with her friend Seema Sharma want to offer her adopted city of Christchurch a real taste of India's archetypal street food with Mumbai Memories, which was launched at the food truck market in Cathedral Square recently. “Offering fresh, authentic, vegetarian street food is our way of showing Christchurch some of the wonderful variety of Indian food,” she says. New Crowne Plaza Christchurch InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a management agreement to develop the 200room Crowne Plaza Christchurch, signalling IHG's commitment to Christchurch's economic revival. Learning through engagement Benjamin Franklin once said “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.” While it was some time in the 18th century that he uttered those words, he could have been describing the philosophy behind Halswell Preschool.

“W

e see the role of the teacher as someone who actively plays with children, a person who expands children's thinking skills and genuinely engages with each child,” co-owner Eileen Keane explains. “With this support from the teachers the children are able to develop the ability to learn for themselves.” With 18 children per day in the Over-Two area and just eight in the Under Twos, the Centre's conscious decision to keep group sizes small allows teachers to have more one on one time with children and ensures the programme meets the learning interests of all children. “We believe our small group sizes really promote the children's wellbeing. It allows the teachers to develop stronger

relationships with the children and also allows the teachers to develop authentic partnerships with families/whanau based on relationships that foster honest communication, trust and respect.” Eileen and co-owner Joy Scott wanted to replicate the strong model they had created at Elmwood Preschool nine years before, establishing the Halswell Junction Road preschool in 2001. “We wanted another place where children could learn to take risks in a safe environment; whether it's a physical risk like jumping from one item to another or challenging themselves intellectually,” Eileen says. “We don't tell children how it's done; we guide them to try it for themselves.” Another area the Centre excels in is allowing

reedom Farms, producers of delicious naturally farmed pork products, shares its delicious ham glaze recipe with Metropol and wishes everyone a very merry Christmas! Ham Glaze 2 C Breakfast marmalade (we use Anothoth Farm Breakfast Marmalade) ½ C orange juice ½ C pineapple juice 1 C brown sugar 3 tsp chili flakes (if you don't like chili, try dried cranberries chopped finely) 1 orange (grated rind and juice) 1 tsp ground cumin seeds ½ tsp ground coriander seeds 3 cardamom pods ground 1 tbsp whole grain mustard 50 whole cloves 1 Freedom Farms ham

For the ham: Remove skin, not the fat (slide your hand under the skin to remove, leave the skin on the hock). Retain the skin, sit the ham on skin as a trivet while cooking in the roasting dish, to this also add 1-2 cups of water for extra moisture. Score ham where the skin has been removed to make a 2-3cm diamond pattern and stud with the whole cloves.

Glaze method: In a saucepan simmer for 5-10 minutes the marmalade, brown sugar, orange juice, pineapple juice, ground coriander, ground cumin seed and ½ of the chili flakes and whole grain mustard (you want this all to reduce slightly, by 30%). Pre heat oven to 160C and spoon or brush some of the glaze mixture on to the skinless ham, then place in oven. Keep basting the ham with this glaze and the pan liquid several times. Cook ham for 10 minutes per kg or until glaze is sticky and shiny. Remove from oven, sprinkle with remaining chili flakes, grate on orange skin.

India’s finest: Flavour & intrigue in the CBD The new Coriander's restaurant and bar has just opened at 222 St Asaph Street, situated in the eye-catching new building that is a replica of the former 1860s Occidental Hotel.

Bollywood room, a Tiger booth, a huge sandstone relief of the Taj Mahal, patterned tiles reminiscent of a Rajasthan fort and a colonial style verandah create an atmospheric setting. With the opening of this establishment, owner Amardeep Singh has not only expanded his culinary empire, he has also raised his already high bar for food and customer service. Of course, the ethnic Indian cuisine served at the new inner city venue is of the same consistent high quality that is delivered at the other four Coriander's. But the new venue offers more options - bar and lunch menus, exciting additions to the dinner menu, a lively wine and cocktail list, and Indian beers on tap. To celebrate the opening, a Christmas banquet offer enables diners to choose anything off the menu. Book the funky Bollywood Room, with its walls papered in colourful movie posters (which seats up to 50)

and you have an exotic venue (complete with Indian background music) for your Christmas function. This is one of the three separate areas (four if you include the veranda) that cleverly enables this large restaurant and bar to cater for imitate and large groups who can enjoy dining, drinking, or even dancing. Recipe ½ lemon, quartered Pinch of ground cinnamon 30ml blanco tequila 15ml elderflower liqueur 60ml apple cider 1 cinnamon stick In a cocktail shaker, muddle the lemon quarters with the ground cinnamon. Add ice and the tequila, elderflower liqueur and apple cider and shake well. Strain into an icefilled rocks glass and garnish with the cinnamon stick. Fresh, spicy flavours N atasha MacAller, author of Vanilla Table – The essence of exquisite cooking from the world's best chefs, shares Norman Van Aken's blend of fresh spicy flavours: pineapple marinated fish with grilled fruit and spicy pineapple vanilla vinaigrette. She says this recipe requires an extraction juicer to make, but that it's a great machine to own for many reasons…

Pineapple Vanilla Vinaigrette

Pineapple vanilla vinaigrette Place the freshly extracted pineapple juice, jalapeno juice and scraped vanilla pods, with seeds, into a pot and simmer gently until reduced down to 1C/250ml, stirring occasionally. Place the reduction in a clean mixing bowl. Whisk in the remaining ingredients, season with salt and pepper, then cover and chill until needed.

Grilled fish and fruit Soak skewers in water Pat fish dry and place in a baking dish. Brush each piece with a generous portion of the vinaigrette and allow fish to marinate for 20-30 minutes as the grill heats up. Carefully skewer fruit, brush with marinade and set aside. When ready to cook, wipe the grill lightly with oil and place fruit skewers and fish on the grill. Carefully turn when sides of fish turn opaque and fruit has seared. Serve immediately with additional vinaigrette on the side.

Christchurch people rebuilding or repairing their earthquake damaged homes can now get free advice to ensure they are warm, dry and energy efficient.

uild Back Smarter is a free service providing advice about insulation, heating methods and energy saving measures such as double glazing, ventilation and lighting. The advisory service is a joint initiative involving the Christchurch City Council, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA), and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA). Homeowners can contact one of the service's assessment providers who will prepare a healthy home improvement plan tailored to the needs and budget of the home owner. Christchurch City Councillor and housing spokesperson Glenn Livingstone says about 20,000 homes will be rebuilt or repaired over the next three years. “This is the perfect time to consider building in energy efficiency options which will make homes warmer, drier, healthier and cheaper to run,” Councillor Livingstone says. “We expect the service will be popular because it is free. However, the improvements are voluntary and homeowners need to meet the cost of the recommended changes,” he says.

“Introducing energy efficiency into your rebuild makes good sense. It might cost a bit more to start with, but it will save money in the long term.” Major banks are supporting the service by extending mortgages and waiving application fees. Low income families with health issues may be eligible for free ceiling and underfloor insulation through Warm Up New Zealand. Over the next three years the Council will invest up to $600,000 in the service – about 40 per cent of the total cost – with partner organisations paying the remainder.

Although Build Back Smarter is primarily for earthquake repairs or rebuilding, it is available to all Christchurch home owners and landlords. Community Energy Action, Right House and Smart Energy Solutions are Build Back Smarter advisors. Homeowners can engage them to do the recommended home improvements but are also free to choose their own tradespeople. Greenwash or green building? Architect Cymon Allfrey opens up about Homestar and why legislating good design will potentially cost us more… Cymon Allfrey

erived from a perceived demand in the market, as well as a need to understand it more clearly, I recently became a Homestar practitioner. Under the Christchurch City Council's Proposed Christchurch Replacement District Plan (PCRDP) it will be mandatory for residential homes to be built to a Homestar Level 6 rating, or include certain energy related features. This is a proposed planning rule that instantly raises alarm bells and potentially will see us fighting agai nst the tide of housing affordability. The first question we need to ask ourselves is whether energy efficient homes are more expensive to build? And secondly, whether we are prepared to compromise good design through legislation? In a recent article published in The Press, a comment taken from the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) submission to the PCRDP was used to highlight potential rising costs associated with energy efficient homes. The NZIA submission su ggested there would be an estimated additional cost of $15,000 per dwelling to comply with the proposed legislative requirements. There are dangers in considering isolated comments, and what wasn't made clear in the article was that the NZIA submission against legislation of Homestar goes far deeper than simply an issue around cost. By focussing on the increased cost we are putting a price on design and ignoring that legislation around good design will result in far great er issues as we take away the value and skill added by design professionals. I am passionate in my view that our homes need to respond to their environment in positive ways. From the materials used, to meeting the needs of the homeowner, to the use of space and the list goes on; these

elements of efficient home design are at the front of my mind right throughout each and every project – as they should be for all design professionals. The issue is that there is a considerable difference between energy efficient design and greenwash. In isolation there is a cost associated with energy efficient decisions, however these decisions and costs need to be made and viewed in balance with the rest of the design and build. In my view, the NZIA submission highlights that legislation may take away this balance. Legislation brings a one-dimensional approach to good design. It creates a pathway that doesn't incorporate other ways of thinking. And by legislating Homestar, we will see Christchurch turn its back on other good design decisions that offset any added cost. When compared with a balanced view of design, Homestar is unsophisticated. It doesn't inherently allow weight to be given to one element over another. Unlike engaging a design professional where, for example, you are able to decide to offset your build costs with the running costs of the home. Homestar instead gives weight to aspects of the build that are deemed important with limited trade-off. As an example, building within 800m of local

amenities, such as shops, will automatically start you on your way to a Homestar rated home, if you are 801m away you will not. This isn't a criticism, simply a fact. There need s to be a line in the sand and 800m is that line. The problem is, irrespective of the competence and ingenuity employed by the design professional to deal with this constraint, once the line is crossed, the design can't be awarded points in this area. The issue I have, is that initiatives and practices like Homestar have a good intent and as a design community we should be encouraging our clients to put these practices into play, however there is no place for it in legislation. Yes w e want to achieve housing affordability and at the same time lift our housing standards, but by inserting certain legislative requirements into Christchurch alone, but not 40 kilometers up the road in Hurunui, we are losing equitable consideration. Should our City Council have the authority to require homes to be built to a higher standard than is required under the Building Code? Homestar has a place but not tucked into legislation, especially when it doesn't have the ind ependence you would expect in a regulatory environment. Essentially, run by its members it is just a club. While there is some government involvement through EECA it is not subject to the rigors of statue. There is no robustness, and essentially changes could be made on a whim as can any Incorporated Society. We need to be approaching energy efficient building in a different manner. It should be about inserting the home, or building, into its environment in a way that focuses on the spiritual or metaphysical reason behind why we want it to be sustainable not why it must be. caarc.co.nz

Salvage operations on local rivers A review of both minimum flow cut-offs and the location of the Environment Canterbury (ECan) flow meters requires urgent attention according to Fish & Game, as it begins fish salvage operations on local rivers and streams.

ith the current weather system gripping the province, the long, hot days accompanied by warm drying winds are crippling local waterways, according to Fish & Game spokesperson Andrew Currie. “The long hot summer was forecast months ago, so what processes were put in place to protect both those with permitted activities, and the life-supporting capabilities of these streams?” Mr Currie says he has received numerous calls from anglers and rural landowners concerned at the exceptionally low flows in some local rivers and streams, especially the Cust River.

Minimalist interior design came about as a direct result of the Minimalist art movement which first surfaced in the 1950s in New York and dominated the art world through the 1950s and 1960s.The art movement came from the overarching movement of the time, Modernism. This is why the terms Modernism and Minimalism are often used almost interchangeably when discussing design. While it is accurate to say that a minimal approach is a modern one, the reverse is not always true.

Minimalism: below the surface

inimalist art is self-contained art; external references and emotion are avoided. Interior designers who work with minimalism tend to broadly follow this ideal. The approach to minimalism in interior design is less rigorous than it is in the art world. This is to be expected as a building's interior has to serve a function beyond the aesthetic – it has to be conducive to the act and to the art of living. There are several distinct objectives within minimalist interior design and the task of the designer is to make these rationales come together as seamlessly as possible. This is no easy task and involves a lot more than knocking down a couple of nonsupporting walls and painting everything white.

The spiritual The first objective is the spiritual. Minimalist interiors are designed to facilitate a sense of calm and peace. People's surroundings have a huge impact on the way that they feel and consequently act. To this end colours tend to be extremely pale or white so as not to induce an emotional response. The minimalist interior designer uses light to define the forms and the spaces where other designers would use materials and finishes. Open plan designs are favoured as this type of architecture promotes a calm, detached feeling. Patterns and textures are generally not used unless they are essential to an object's function. An unfinished brick wall could easily be incorporated into minimalist design as the texture is directly related to its function, but wallpaper with an image of bricks would be about as anti-minimalist as it is possible to be.

Multipurpose objects are important in this regard. Energy efficiency The importance of energy conservation in the light of recent discoveries regarding climate change and potential fuel scarcities means that energy efficiency is now an essential part of minimalist design.

hen you mention luxury large SUVs to the average Joe, naturally a Range Rover of some description will come to mind. This year, the new Range Rover Sport has been a sales smash for Land Rover New Zealand, with 150 units already being snapped up pre launch earlier this year. Once driven, it was easy to see why. Sure, the previous Range Rover Sport was impressive, but still felt like an unfinished symphony. The new Sport however, as we found out in the first half of 2014, was a stunner. With a variety of spec levels and engine choices – including the all conquering supercharged V8 – the sky was the limit when it came to dressing up your sport. Plus, the new car proved itself to be so capable in every situation it came across, whether parked outside the best restaurant in town or climbing every mountain and fording every stream, the Sport can get it done, making it the obvious choice of AutoPlus Large SUV of the Year 2014.

he Hot Hatch scene has been getting crowded for quite some time. Last year, our favourite was the Renault Megane RS265. While king of the hill on the track, day to day use was not its best feature. So the winner of Hot Hatch of the Year 2014 is a car with the get up and go, but with added day to day practicality – the 2014 Volkswagen Golf R. AUTO PLUS Best in class Saloon

he Mercedes C-Class has always been a force to be reckoned with in the executive saloon category. Countless back to back road tests have seen C-Class go up against rivals like Audi’s A4 and the wonderful BMW 3-Series. However, while previous generations of the C-Class were very good indeed, the initial package was not quite there yet. The new car though. Oh my God… Borrowing design elements from the S-Class and CLA, the new C wowed us from the get go with an array of swooping curves, LEDS and chrome accents. Interior design received and overhaul too. Once again drawing inspiration from the flagship S-Class, it is a sublime place to be. Five driving modes, Eco, Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual are at your command by the agility toggle switch found on the centre console. Plus a swipe keypad controlled all infotainment systems much like an iPad. Testing the C200 with AMG line spec was a treat. While no hard core speed machine, we found there to be little on the road in this market which handled and performed quite like the new C. AutoPlus saloon of the year? Of course.

Best in class Small/mid-sized SUV

utoPlus first tested the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV during a special preview drive late last year, but it was early this year when we got to spend some serious time with the first Plug in Hybrid Electric SUV to hit New Zealand Roads. At $59,990, it’s a bit dear for an Outlander, but then again, your average Outlander does not return fuel consumption figures of 1.9L/100km. Up to 80kms of silent emissions free electric driving can be had, while charging the lithium ion batteries overnight will cost a mere $1.41. Regenerative braking also helps with the charging process when on the move. To drive, the PHEV feels much like a car, not a lab experiment. Though the silence took some getting used to, weighted steering, minimal body roll and the benefit of instant low down torque make a huge difference on the open road.

owever, of all the eight automotive gems which have rocked Kiwi roads this year, there can be only one winner (an overused expression but bear with me), so here it is.
